KEWEENAW COUNTY — Authorities are investigating the death of a man Saturday afternoon in what appeared to be an accidental fall from atop a waterfall in Keweenaw County.
The fall was reported about 12:10 p.m. Saturday at Manganese Falls in Grant Township, according to a Monday morning news release from the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office. The man, thought to be in his 50s, was walking along the path when he fell about 25 feet, the department said. He was pronounced dead at the site.
His name was not released to maintain the family’s privacy, the sheriff’s department stated.
A sheriff’s deputy at the site said the incident occurred from the top of the waterfall. “He fell from an elevated area at the top of the falls to the first pool,” said the deputy, who asked that his name not be disclosed. “They were in a spot that maybe wasn’t appropriate to be looking over the falls.”
The fall does not appear to be suspicious, as the initial investigation suggests it was an accident, according to the news release.
The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s office thanked responding agencies that included the Copper Harbor Volunteer Fire Department, Keweenaw County Search and Rescue, Michigan State Parks and Recreation and the Calumet Township Fire Department.
The sheriff’s department reminded the public to be cautious and know their limits before venturing into the outlying landscapes to enjoy the scenic area.
