ISLE ROYALE — Murder-suicide is suspected to be the cause of death for two campers on Isle Royale this month, according to published reports.

They were found June 8 in Isle Royale National Park’s South Lake Desor Campground near Greenstone Ridge trail, a remote area of the island. Two rangers had to hike 11 miles overnight to reach the campground and confirm the deaths June 9.

Neither the manner of death nor their names have been released.

While a national park, Isle Royale is also under the jurisdiction of Keweenaw County.

Keweenaw County Medical Examiner Dr. Michael McAllister told MLive the deceased are father and son, but it’s not known who died first.

The FBI continues to investigate and has not released any further information, according to MLive.

The Dane County, Wisconsin, Medical Examiner’s Office handled the autopsies at the direction of the FBI or National Park Service and did not respond to requests for comment, the MLive article stated.

The identities of the victims are being withheld, based on claims that releasing them could jeopardize the investigation, MLive reported.

A Lansing-area funeral home is planning to receive the remains, McCallister told MLive.
