Body recovered from Lake Superior in Pictured Rocks area
MUNISING — Authorities on Thursday recovered a body from Lake Superior within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in what is being described as a suicide.
Park visitors reported seeing a person face down in the water about 2:30 p.m. near Chapel Beach, according to a news release from the National Park Service. Park rangers and first responders, along with Alger County paramedics, were able to reach the person and start lifesaving efforts but were unsuccessful and the individual was pronounced dead at the site.
Preliminary information indicates the death was the result of an apparent suicide, according to the news release. The identity of the individual was withheld pending notification of next of kin and no further details released out of respect for the family.
Chapel Beach and the surrounding areas remain open to the public.
