Marion "Mim" L. Asplund

IRON RIVER — Marion “Mim” L. Asplund, 106, of Iron River, passed away on Monday, Dec. 31, at the Iron River Care Center.

She was born on July 23, 1912, in Stambaugh, the daughter of the late Olaf and Augusta (Ruus) Asplund. She attended Stambaugh Schools and graduated from Stambaugh High School with the Class of 1930.

While in high school, Mim was a member of The Trillium Club of Girl Reserves of Stambaugh. The code of the Girl Reserve was: “As a Girl Reserve I will try to face life squarely to find and give the best.” She followed that motto throughout her life as evident of her long life.

Following high school, she worked in Chicago and Land O’Lakes, Wis., before moving to Foley, Ala. She was then employed as a secretary for Foley High School for over 30 years. Mim enjoyed many years in Foley living on the Bon Secour River. She returned to the Iron River area to make her home in 2000. For the last five years, she was a resident of the Iron River Care Center.

Mim was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Iron River and the Foley United Methodist Church while living in Alabama. She had also been a member of the Iron County Hospital Auxiliary for many years.

She enjoyed reading, watching game shows and traveling. Each summer she traveled with a group of Winnebago owners with her friend Dorothy Lawrence. She was proud that she had the opportunity to visit all 48 contiguous states throughout those years. Her special companion poodle, Muffin, traveled with her.

Besides her travels in the U.S., Mim made trips to Russia and Sweden. And she drove until she was 100 years old. Working on counted cross stitch was another hobby and many of her items were shared with friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, August, Arthur and Robert Asplund; sisters, Emma Carlson, Inez Kaiser, Clara Sensiba and Mildred Possanza; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation and funeral services will be held at Jacobs Funeral Home, Inc. of Iron River, with interment in the Iron River City Cemetery, in the spring.
