Mary E. Peters

KINGSFORD — Mary E. Peters, 90, of Kingsford, passed away on Monday, July 29, 2019, at ManorCare Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Kingsford.

Mary was born on Aug. 23, 1928, in Marquette, daughter of the late George and Margaret (Kern) Nelson. Her family moved to Iron Mountain when she was a junior in high school and she was a resident here since. Mary was a 1946 graduate of Iron Mountain High School. She married Thomas Peters Jr. on April 30, 1949, at St. Mary and St. Joseph Church in Iron Mountain.

Mary was an active member of American Martyrs Church and the St. Veronica Circle of the church. She volunteered at the VA Medical Center until she was 87 years old.

Mary was a wonderful homemaker and an excellent cook. She enjoyed walking and reading. Many years ago the family put a flagpole up in the yard for Thomas Jr. who was a veteran. Every morning Tom would put the flag up and every evening he would take it down.

After Tom passed away, Mary was very faithful about keeping that tradition going. She took great pride in her home and yard and lived independently until moving to ManorCare two years ago. While at ManorCare, Mary enjoyed visiting with the residents, playing bingo and participating in other social activities.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas on May 29, 2003; and her brothers, Bruce, Lee, George and Robert Nelson.

She is survived by her children, Margie (Gary) Tarsi of Channing, Thomas (Mary) Peters of Iron Mountain, Jody Sanford of Marquette and Jean (Mark) Luoma of Munising; grandchildren, Scott (Missy) Tarsi, Eric Tarsi, Lisa (Eric) Hermann, Ashley (Kyle) Peterson, Thomas Peters IV, Paul (Carrie) Sanford, Lee Sanford, Natalie (David) Campbell and Andrew (Sarah Graff) Luoma; great-grandchildren, Braeden, Aubrey, Owen, Ella, Lincoln, Wyatt, Gavin and Kai.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6 at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at American Martyrs Church in Kingsford. Fr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Burial will be in Dickinson County Memorial Gardens.

The family would like to thank the caring staff at ManorCare for the love and compassion shown to Mary in her last days.
