Herbert "Herb" Handt

NIAGARA, Wis. — Herbert “Herb” Handt, 88, of Niagara, Wis., passed away peacefully Monday, Sept. 2, 2019, at the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain, with his daughter (Sandy Peters) by his side.

He was born Jan. 17, 1931, in Watertown, Wis., the only son of the late Herbert and Betty Handt of Niagara. Herbert graduated from Niagara High and then shortly after proudly served in the United States Navy for a short period, where he affectionately earned the nickname “Swabie.”

After leaving the service, he worked for numerous telephone companies, traveling all over the United States. That is when he met Edna McCoy in Virginia and the two were married in 1966. The following year they had their only daughter Sandra. They moved back to Niagara in 1967 where he worked at the Niagara Telephone Company for the next 25-plus years, retiring in 1996. He continued to reside in Niagara for the remainder of his life.

Herbie enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his daughter, Sandy Peters (Rick Schadrie); two granddaughters, Samantha (Derrick) Hrubesky and Haley Peters; and great-granddaughter, Juliana Hrubesky, all of Green Bay, Wis.; two sisters, Nancy (Roger) Rocconi, Donna Bagozzi and Dona’s daughter-in-law, Tina Bagozzi and her children, Alicia and Michael; Nancy’s son and Herb’s nephew, Jeff (Lori) Tanko and their daughter, Amy (Kevin) Venstra and their son Dylan, all of Niagara; and Edna Boerner of Green Bay; and by his former wife, whom he continued to remain friends with through the years.

In addition to his parents, Herb was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Lou Bagozzi; and nephew, Steve Bagozzi.

Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7 at the Jacobs Funeral Home-Niagara Chapel.

Funeral services will follow at 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Pastor Doug Johnson will officiate.

Burial will be in Niagara Cemetery.
