John F. Englund

John F. Englund

SPREAD EAGLE, Wis. — John F. Englund, 85, of Spread Eagle, Wis., passed away at home on April 1, 2021, with family members at his side.

John was born Aug. 2, 1935, and grew up in Commonwealth, Wis. He joined the service before attending UW-Madison where he graduated with a geology and law degree.

John opened “the office” (John F. Englund Attorney at Law) in Iron Mountain many moons ago. A creature of habit, John would have been recognized in recent years making daily visits to the post office, bank, and grocery store, while wearing a too-large khaki trench coat filled with dollar store eyeglasses. No doubt, we will be finding eyeglasses in all nooks of the house for years to come, a regular reminder of John and of his inability to throw anything away.

John will be remembered for his gentle spirit which was extended to many (including house spiders), an admirable capacity to find wonder in nature and the quiet moments, an unexpected dry wit, and innumerable idiosyncrasies. He had a concerning ability to consume strange food concoctions and seemingly inedible items often to the horror of his children. We have attributed the latter to his remarkably resilient immune system, but do not recommend this method to others.

An avid bird watcher, John also enjoyed chopping wood, snorkeling, and took delight in the everyday. In addition to a kind heart, his (at times maddeningly) stubborn personality will be impossible to forget and greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Julia Newton; and children, Daniel, Anna, and Nita of whom he cared for very deeply. vi älskar dig.

He is preceded in death by his sister, Gwen (Lonn); mother, Anne, and father, John.

A celebration of John’s life will be held later this summer.
