Roland F. Anderson

KINGSFORD — Roland F. Anderson, 97, of Kingsford passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at Optalis Health & Rehabilitation in Kingsford.

He was born in Norway, in September, 1925, son of the late Arthur and Anna (Chiesa) Anderson. Roland attended school in Foster City. In his early years he worked a logging camp, was a team horse driver at a farm and at the Norway Fair for the horse-pulling competition, a truck driver, built army barracks at a lumber mill in Detroit, and worked at the Ford Plant.

On June 24, 1945, Roland enlisted with the U.S. Army. While serving in Austria he met his wife, Maria T. Scherer. They were married on Nov.29, 1947, at a castle in Salzburg, Austria. Roland served 23 years on active-duty Army including deployments during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

His military awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal with Bronze Clasp & 3 Knots, World War II Victory Medal, World War II Occupation Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Korea Defense Service Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal.

After retiring from the military, Roland worked in mining, logging, the Niagara Paper Mill, and in the automotive industry. He established himself as an entrepreneur at his Amoco station in Quinnesec for 18 years, then he retired.

Roland was a long-time member of American Martyrs Catholic Church, the Norway VFW Post 4581, The Niagara American Legion Post 136, and served as a Boy Scout Master in Niagara. Roland was a true outdoorsman. He loved spending time at his camp in Foster City, fishing, hunting, hobby logging, and spending time with his family. Roland will be remembered as a strong family man and a social man with a kind heart.

Roland will be deeply missed by his wife, Maria; children, Linda Anderson (Greg Holmes), David (Maureen) Anderson, and Dinah (Michael) La Count; grandchildren, Brendan, Jessica, Andrea, Bradley, Kevin, Bryan, Bill, Dustin, Joey, and Jeff; great-grandchildren Benjamin, Brittany, Donovan, Alyssa, Ben, Beauden, Billy, Dylan, Logan, Sam, Maria, Hailee, Max, Brooklyn, Charlie, Bauer, Adelina, and Maria Christina; great-great-grandchildren Henry Roland, Jack, and Ahsoka; and his many nieces, nephews, and friends.

In addition to his parents, Roland was preceded in death by his grandson, Bryan Kallenbach; and his siblings, Robert, Fern, Wally, John, and Marion.

Visitation will be at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home, 901 Carpenter Ave., from 8:30 to 10:15 a.m. on Monday June 5, followed by a procession to American Martyr’s Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Gouin officiating the funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at the Quinnesec Cemetery.
