Peter John Hayes

Peter was born July 10, 1951, to Willard and Ruth Hayes in Norway. After graduating from Norway High School, Peter briefly attended Northern Michigan University before joining the Navy. He graduated from the Great Lakes Navel Academy, then spent the next six years working as a nuclear electrician, first in nuclear power plants and then on submarines.

After being discharged from the Navy, Peter attended Western Michigan University for three years, working on a triple major. He took care of three rental properties with his friend and companion, Bandy, an English Sheepdog.

Peter met Mary LaMarch, and the two were married Oct. 2, 1982, at Grace United Methodist Church in Norway. Together they had three children, Sarah, Zachariah and Magdalene.

Despite his rough demeanor, Peter was a gentle giant. He was easy-going and never held a grudge, a true diamond in the rough.

He loved his kids and grandkids. Peter had a deep faith in God and read the bible many times. He loved sharing his views and the meanings of what he had read. Having a passion for the outdoors, Peter had many dreams and ideas.

Peter was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and Willard Hayes; and his son, Zachariah John Hayes.

Peter is survived by his daughters, Sarah and Magdalene; his five grandchildren, Amery, Chloe, Omar, Elijah and Josiah; ex-wife, Mary LaMarch; brother, Paul Hayes (Donna); sisters, Penelope Lambert, Margaret Hayes, Kathy Bal (Dennis) and Delia Chippewa.

An open memorial service will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 2, at Grace United Methodist Church, 130 O’Dill Drive in Norway.

A reception and luncheon will follow the service.

Private burial services will be held by the family.
