Herman Chounard Jr.
KINGSFORD — Herman Chounard Jr., 94, of Kingsford, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2024, at Marshfield Medical Center – Dickinson in Iron Mountain.
Herman was born Dec. 24, 1929, in Loretto, son of Herman and Margaret (DeBock) Chounard. He was a dairy farmer until he was drafted into the U.S. Army for the Korean War. Herman spent time at various locations overseas in South Korea, as well as stateside at the Hanford Plutonium/Atomic Bomb Plant near Yakima, Wash., during his two-year tour. Upon his discharge from the Army, Herman worked for Kingsford Chemical, Canning Factory, and Montgomery Ward, but he spent the majority of his working career in various roles, from driver to dispatcher, at Clairmont Transfer Co. After Clairmont ceased operations in 1985, he worked for Khoury, Inc. for a short stint before taking a position at Bantom/Double Day/Dell Publishing group in Chicago as a dock worker, where he worked until he retired in 1993.
Herman was married to Rosalie (Turdo) Grenfell Chounard for 28 years.
An avid sports fan, he loved watching the Green Bay Packers (unless they weren’t doing well), as well as the Milwaukee Bucks and Chicago Cubs. He had a passion for basketball and participated throughout his high school years at Vulcan where he was a standout player at the center position. Often the high scorer, he was a key member of the team that took second place in 1945, but went on to win the championships in 1946 and ’47. Herman also loved gardening of any kind, but he definitely had a green thumb with all things in the vegetable and flower gardens. An avid outdoorsmen (especially in his younger years), he loved being in the woods, whether fishing/ice fishing, snowshoeing, trapping and rabbit/bird/deer hunting.
Along with his parents, Herman is preceded in death by his wife, Rosalie; and stepson, John Grenfell.
