NIAGARA, Wis. — John Stephen Buchanan, 74, of Niagara passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2024, at Bellin Memorial Hospital in Green Bay, Wis.

John was born on Nov. 24, 1949, to the late Alexander and Corrine (Dufresne) Buchanan.

He married Margaret “Peggy” Sielaff on Nov. 18, 1976, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Niagara.

John worked in the Niagara papermill for 39 years before his retirement. He coached Little League for 12 years and was an accomplished softball player. His love of baseball continued as he watched his grandsons play ball. In his later years, he enjoyed building a camp and spending time out there. John was an avid gardener and was known for growing giant sunflowers.

John is survived by his wife, Margaret “Peggy” (Sielaff) Buchanan; his son, John (Jackie) Buchanan of Niagara; his daughters, Erin (Michael) Darnick of Hortonville, Wis. and Angela Pengrazi of Niagara. He is further survived by his sister, Christine Moss of Medford, Wis.; five grandchildren, Simon Darnick, Remington and Tucker Buchanan, Ambrielle and Addelynn Amundson, and Finley Pengrazi; one great-grandchild, Rahlee Amundson; along with numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Alexander and Corinne; brother, Jeff Buchanan; parents-in-law, Francis and Jean Sielaff; and his brother-in-law, Jeff Champeau.

Visitation hours will begin at 9 a.m. with a funeral service beginning at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 7, at Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain, with Fr. Janusz Romanek officiating.
