Bertha Jane ‘BJ’ Sparks

ROMNEY, W.Va. — Bertha Jane “BJ” Sparks, 94, of Romney, W.Va., passed away peacefully in Romney after a life devoted to family, service, and kindness.

Born in Sagola Township, on Feb. 15, 1931, to Curtiss and Mary (Pitman) Sparks. She was the third of nine children and spent her early years between the Upper Peninsula and summers in the foothills of Kentucky.

She married young and raised five children; the late Robert Fehrle, and four daughters, Gidget Nepper (Ron), Mary Fehrle, Patricia Anderson (Harold), and Enola “Noni” Heckert (Ted).

BJ was a devoted volunteer, generously giving her time to the VA Hospital in Iron Mountain, and later to the American Red Cross in Romney. A proud O-negative blood donor, she gave regularly throughout her life. Known for her fiery spirit, she was never one to stay silent or sit still. She could often be found dancing to whatever music was playing- and more than once, she joined in on the drums.

She was preceded in death by her son, Robert; a grandson, Darwin; three brothers, Robert, Franklin, and Allen; and two sisters, Jessie and Lavern.

BJ is survived by her daughters, 20 grandchildren, numerous great and great-great grandchildren; her siblings, Kate, Stella, and Andrew; and a special friend, Frank McDonald.

BJ was known for her warmth, humor, and signature phrases. When asked how she was, her reply would always be, “Peachy keen fine!” and parting words were always, “Later, Gator. After while, Crocodile.” She also enjoyed her favorite marshmallow treat, Peeps, no matter the color or size.

A service of life and resurrection will be held on Friday, June 20, at 1 p.m. at the Romney First United Methodist Church with Pastor Sharmune Burgess officiating. Friends will be received one-hour prior. Interment will follow at Ebenezer Cemetery in Romney.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to be made in BJ’s memory to: Romney First United Methodist Church Food Pantry, 49 North High St., Romney, WV 26757.
