NORWAY — Edward Jerome Jasonowicz, 100, of Norway passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.
Ed was born on Jan. 29, 1925, in Norway and was the son of the late John and Anna Jasonowicz.
Ed graduated from Norway High School in 1943. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was briefly assigned to the USS Indianapolis. While waiting for a medical clearance he was transferred and served aboard the USS Lang in the south Pacific for over 18 months.
After WWII ended, Ed returned to Norway and married Charlotte Tomasini on Sept. 3, 1949. They were blessed with four children, Mary (Tony) Melchiori of Marshfield, Wis., Mark (Marilyn) Jasonowicz of Kewadin, Marcia (Bob) Peterson of Norway and Angela (Darrell) Finley of Norway. Ed and Char have eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Ed attended Northern Michigan University where he received a bachelor’s degree in teaching. He later received a master’s degree by attending summer school at Michigan Tech, MSU and U of M. Ed taught math and science at Vulcan High School for two years before being named the Vulcan high school principal in 1952. In 1964 with the consolidation of the Norway area schools, Ed was named Vulcan middle school principal and taught advanced biology at Norway High.
Ed was a life member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Knights of Columbus, VFW, American Legion and a member of Oak Crest Golf Course for over 45 years.
Ed loved serving his community and demonstrated this by serving on numerous boards and committees (many of which he chaired) including the Dickinson County Board of Commissioners, Dickinson County Fair Board, Pinecrest Board, Social Services Board, Norway-Vulcan Industrial Board, Jake Menghini Museum Board, and St. Mary Catholic Church. Ed was especially proud to serve for over 25 years as the master of ceremonies for the Memorial Day celebration at the Norway Cemetery. In recognition of his service, Ed was named Friend of Norway in 2013 and given the key to the city.
Ed was an avid card player and he and Char loved dancing to the big band sounds, enjoying summer days on their back porch, gardening, taking golf trips and socializing with friends and neighbors.
In addition to his parents Ed was preceded in death by his wife Char and his five siblings.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the Evergreen Assisted living center in Norway, where Ed resided for 2 ½ years. The family would also like to thank the VA hospital staff; the VA home-based primary care staff and the Marshfield Medical Center Dickinson staff for all their loving and compassionate care.
Visitation will be held on Thursday June 19 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Ortman Funeral Home in Norway.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 20 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Catholic Church in Norway with the Reverend Marty Flynn officiating.
Interment will follow at the Norway Township Cemetery.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Mary or the Jake Menghini Museum.
