Maxine Vaccarello

CRYSTAL FALLS — Maxine Leone Oberdorfer Vaccarello, 91, went to be with the Lord on June 10, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith and kindness.

She was born July 9, 1933, in Crystal Falls, daughter of the late James and Melba (Erickson) Urban. Max was a lifelong resident of the area and graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1951. S

he married Robert Oberdorfer on Dec. 6, 1952, at St. Mary & St. Joseph Church in Iron Mountain. He preceded her in death in 1996. She worked for Michigan Bell early in her career and later dedicated over 25 years of service to Shopko. She was also employed as a patient services receptionist at DCHS for several years. After retirement, Maxine remained active in several community groups including the Women’s Club, Golden K, and the Red Hat Society.

Later in life, Maxine married Steve Vaccarello on July 7, 2012, and he preceded her in death on April 17, 2015.

Maxine was a woman of deep faith whose heart radiated God’s light to everyone she met. She had a remarkable gift for caregiving, always putting others before herself. Her adventurous spirit, love of reading, and ability to live each day to the fullest left a lasting impression on all who knew her. She was a talented cook who brought people together through meals and memories.

Maxine’s legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.

She is survived by her three children, Mike (Debbie) Oberdorfer of Kingsford, Rob (Darcy) Oberdorfer of Cedar Springs, Mich., and Jody (Steve) Marek of Kingsford; a daughter-in-law, Lauri Oberdorfer of Kingsford; one stepson, Peter (Lena) Vaccarello of New Hampshire, Ill.; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer (Matt) Meekhof, Justin (Natalie) Oberdorfer, Jaime (Ian) Powell, Angela (Jesse) DeBaker, Luke Oberdorfer (Paige), Michelle (Dave) Wolf, Amanda (Mike) Heidtman, Stephanie (Dustin) Sotka, Kali (Stuart) Haas, Kendahl Oberdorfer, and Kyle (Kendra) Oberdorfer; and 22 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was also preceded in death by a son, Daniel Oberdorfer, and two great-grandchildren, Gordon Alexander Wolf and Ellie Mae Haas.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on July 7, at the First Covenant Church in Iron Mountain. Memorial services will follow at 11 a.m. at the church with Pastor Chad Harrison officiating. Burial in the Quinnesec Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Covenant Church or St. Jude’s Hospital.
