IRON MOUNTAIN — It wasn’t easy at first, but Iron Mountain found a groove in the second quarter and spilled Bark River-Harris 75-56 on Monday.

The Mountaineers’ non-conference win was helped by a game-high 27 points from Carson Wonders.

Jaden Vicenzi’s 14-point second quarter keyed the ability for Iron Mountain to pull away from Bark River, who hung on early in the game with three triples from Logan Heim.

Iron Mountain (6-1, 3-1 Mid-Peninsula Conference) then found defensive stops and used its transition offense where Vicenzi took passes while driving to the basket and scoring eight straight points.

“It took us a little while to catch up to the speed of the game,” Iron Mountain coach Bucky Johnson said. “Once we did, then we did pretty well. I mean, you got to credit Bark River.”

Both teams traded points in the first quarter before Iron Mountain scored at the end for a 13-8 lead heading into the second. The Broncos rallied to stay within four.  The Mountaineers took a timeout with a 22-18 lead and 4:41 left in the second quarter. About three minutes later, Vicenzi and the Mountaineers exploded to a 32-20 lead.

Iron Mountain held a 36-22 lead at halftime.

Bark River-Harris (7-1) continued passing in the second half around the perimeter and occasionally tried to dribble-drive and kick out to an open shooter from long range. As the Broncos shooting cooled off, they began attacking the basket. When some shots rimmed out and Iron Mountain brought the ball down the court to score, Bark River-Harris soon found themselves staring at an expansive 20-point deficit in the third quarter.

Bark River-Harris coach Jim VanEnkevort said Iron Mountain’s transition game was overpowering.

“They got on a run late in the second half for three or four minutes and opened the game up,” VanEnkevort said. “We didn’t have an answer for that. They played tough D and once they get that rebound, they’re gone.”

Ryan Arndt led Bark River-Harris with 14 points. Heim finished with 10 points.

The Broncos cut Iron Mountain’s lead to about 10 in the third quarter, but never got any closer.
