Wrestling: Iron Mountain’s Bolo, Kingsford’s Povolo and Schmutzler notch first-place at Elks Invite

ESCANABA — Iron Mountain produced three individual champions and Kingsford had two in the Escanaba Elks Invitational high school wrestling tournament Saturday.

Mountaineers’ Aaron Bolo (189) kept his unbeaten record while teammates Dylan Hoffart (125) and Braydon Fitzpatrick (215) also took top honors. Trevor Povolo (145) and Jonathan Schmutzler (152) notched Kingsford’s first-place finishes.

Bolo  pinned Braden Olsen of Escanaba and Sam Collins of Negaunee before beating Reece Ferrigan of Grayling in the finals by a major decision (13-0).

“Aaron has been wrestling at a high level and continued that into the finals,” said Iron Mountain coach Brandon Rutter.

Hoffart built a 10-1 lead over Max Halstead in the finals before an injury default stopped the match. The Grayling wrestler entered with a 17-2 record.

“That was Dylan’s best match of the year,” Rutter said.

Fitzpatrick pinned Tyler Labadie of Bark River-Harris in the second period for the 215-pound championship. This was the first time that Fitzpatrick and Labadie, who moved up from 189, had faced each other.

“Fitzpatrick continues to roll this season,” Rutter said. “He has looked good all year.”

The Mountaineers added a fourth from Jacob Carlson (130) and fifth from Dow Dawson (135).

Mountaineers’ Joe Comstock lost on a major decision (21-10) in the 171-pound finals to Adam Hildebrandt of Newberry.

“It was great to see Joe in the finals,” Rutter said. “He has worked hard this season.”

Povolo outscored Escanaba’s Ean Bevins 14-9 for the

145-pound championship.  Schmutzler beat Christian Cole of Munising 6-2 for the 152-pound title.

Flivvers’ August Early was pinned in the 103-pound finals by Westwood’s Nathan Brewer. Nick Ouradnik (285) was another Kingsford runner-up, losing by a fall to Zach Kelly of Grayling.

Kingsford added sixths from Kalina Nichols (119) and Jesse Julian (135) .

Grayling, 190.5, won the tournament, followed by Westwood 173, Iron Mountain 134.5, St. Ignace 128, Escanaba 124.5, Kingsford  114.5, Negaunee 105, Newberry 81, Ishpeming 80, Munising 79, Menominee 73.5, Gwinn 70, UP Extra 58.5, Benzie Central  43, Bark River-Harris 40, UP Extra 2 17, and Detour  4.

“p1″>”As a team we looked good Saturday,” Rutter said. “We started a little slow, but after the first two rounds we got going.  Six out of the eight guys entered placed with everyone picking up at least one win.”

The Mountaineers wrestle Saturday in the Ray Mariucci Invitational at Kingsford. Bolo sports a 19-0 record, followed by Fitzpatrick, 18-2, and Hoffart, 15-5.
