Tennis: Kingsford sinks West Iron County

IRON RIVER — Kingsford defeated West Iron County 5-2 in a battle of boys tennis unbeatens Wednesday at Nelson Field Courts.

“Competitive matches,” said Kingsford Coach Mark Shanks, noting both teams were missing doubles starters. “I’m very happy with the way my doubles played.”

Flivvers’ Tyler Beauchamp and No. 1 doubles sub Preston Strong downed Brandon Henschel and Kevin Ballanger 6-4, 6-2. Kingsford also won at three and four doubles.

“Preston Strong played very well,” Shanks said.

WIC No 2 doubles Seth Miatech and Steve Newby spilled Cameron Mulka and Nick Murvich 6-2, 6-3.

“Two doubles played well,” Shanks said of the new team. “Those games were good and close.”

In No. 1 singles, Kingsford’s Alek Shanks outlasted Neil Tomasoski 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

Rain washed out the No. 3 singles third set between the Flivvers’ Nick McCole and Caden Pellizzer. The match and third set are tied at 1-1, with a possible conclusion in a May 23 dual at Kingsford.

Kingsford (5-0-1) hosts Marquette today. West Iron County (4-1) joins Iron Mountain, Negaunee, Escanaba and Menominee in the Kingsford Invitational on Saturday.
