Boys basketball: West Iron County stops Calumet’s win streak

CALUMET — West Iron County ended Calumet’s six-game winning streak Friday with a 49-44 West PAC boys basketball win.

Steven Nelson led the Wykons (7-7, 4-0) with 21 points.

The Wykons, shooting free throws at a 69-percent clip this season, converted 23 of 29 in the game including 13 of 14 in the fourth quarter. Caden Pellizzer made all six of his free throws and Nelson was nine of 10.

“We made our free throws and kept Matt Ojala (15 points) under control,” said WIC coach Dan Schive. “Neil Tomasoski had him and did a solid job considering the amount of shots he puts up.”

Calumet scored just four first-quarter points as WIC led 9-4. The game was tied at 18 at halftime.

“Just a bad night for us to struggle like we did offensively,” Calumet coach Mike Ojala said. “As a group, it was one thing this year that I thought we been pretty good on that end of the court. Haven’t had a game where we struggled that much with all five guys.”

Ojala said Nelson also keyed a team defensive effort in limiting Calumet’s offensive attack.

“Nelson makes a difference in the paint around the basket,” Ojala said. “Just defensively, I thought we did enough to win the game. Just got to shoot better.”

The Wykons visit Escanaba on Tuesday.

West Iron won the jayvee game.
