Jets rout Nordics

Boys Basketball

POWERS — Several different players have taken their turns leading the North Central Jets in scoring throughout this basketball season.

It was Griffin Johnson’s turn Tuesday night as he hit a career-high 22 points in a 71-34 conquest of North Dickinson (2-13).

“Griffin puts in the most time of anybody I’ve had as coach,” said Jets head coach Adam Mercier. “North Dickinson started in kind of a pack-in zone and Griffin shot with confidence. Our guys were real patient and did a great job finding him. Girffin is the seventh leading scorer we’ve had this season. We’re making sure different guys are able to step up. We keep working hard in practice so we can get better for March.”

North Dickinson head coach Chris Mattson said North Central’s 27-point second quarter was a back-breaker for the Nordics.

“Our inability to make a basket really got to us in the second quarter. They blasted us with 27 points. They hit six 3s in that quarter alone,” Mattson said. “We weren’t able to keep up with them offensively. We wanted to play slower offensively. They played faster, they played less sloppy. They played better defense. They rebounded and shot the ball better. We have to make strides offensively.”

Johnson, who drained six 3-point shots, was followed by Austin Poupore with 10 points.

The Jets (11-4), who led 13-3 after the first quarter and 40-13 at halftime.

Joe Roell led the Nordics with seven points.

“They’re big and strong,” Mercier said of the Nordics. “They limited our dribble penetration.”

The Jets, who also won the JV game, host Norway Friday. The Nordics host Carney-Nadeau Friday.
