May be time to retire the Paul Miller/John Ostermann Most Quotable Coach Award.

West Iron County’s Dan Schive turned in another gem after the Wykons bowed to Iron Mountain in the Class C district finals.

In saluting his four seniors while talking to Gary and Don on WIKB, Schive opened by expressing appreciation to foreign exchange student Bernie (The Belgium Assassin) Forte and hard-working Brandon Henschel who also serves as the bus DJ.

Schive mentioned senior starters Steven Nelson and Neil Tomasoski together.

“I don’t know if you can separate Steven and Neil,” Schive said. “They’re bound at the hip forever, came up basically together. They’re best of friends, point guard and center.”

Schive has no doubt all four will be “wonderfully successful” down the road of life.

“If you don’t appreciate and love the kids you’ve coached for the last three or four years, you shouldn’t be doing this job,” Schive said.

Schive clinched the Paul Miller/John Ostermann Most Quotable Coach Award for about the eighth-straight year when discussing Nelson.

“We don’t grow 6-8 kids in Iron River very often,” Schive said. “Hopefully, Steven sticks around Iron River (after college), finds himself a tall wife and has a whole bunch of extra Nelsons.”

There’s already chatter of NMU hockey coach Grant Potulny returning to Minnesota.

Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press wrote that Potulny is “expected to receive serious consideration if the Gophers men’s hockey team makes a coaching change.”
