KINGSFORD — Kingsford’s girls and Iron Mountain’s boys took team honors Thursday in a dual track and field meet at Flivver Field.

Olivia Allen figured in four firsts as the Flivvers downed the Mountaineers 93-47 in the girls meet.

Michael Kulas, winning two distance runs and anchoring two relays, led the Mountaineer boys past the Flivvers 7-57. Jaden Vicenzi also contributed four firsts.

Allen raced to firsts in the 100 (12.97), 200 (27.97) and 400-meter (1:06.50) along with participating in the 1600 relay (4:37.37). Kingsford took first in 13 of the 17 events.

The Flivvers added three firsts each from Peyton Johnson in the 800 (2:46.84), 3200 relay (11:22.81) and 1600 relay; Renee Roberts in shot (30-11), long jump (14-8.75) and 800 relay (1:54.88); and Sarah Roell in high jump (4-6), 800 relay and 1600 relay.

Roberts was also runner-up in 300 hurdles.

Rylee Palmer’s firsts in discus (84-3) and shot (30-11) led the Flivver field event athletes to a 32-8 advantage. Melanie Wenzel was first in 1600 (6:04.65) and 3200 relay, and second in 800.

“Melanie Wenzel got us off to a great start in the 3200 relay and mile run,” said Kingsford coach Lisa Harry. “Olivia followed with her firsts and we were off to the races.

“Field events cleaned up once again.”

Wenzel, Lily Menghini and Peyton Johnson swept the 1600.

Iron Mountain’s Olivia Berutti won the 100 hurdles (17.14) and Taylor Talerico was first in 300 hurdles (51.57). Both girls also ran on the winning 400 relay team.

Talerico added a second in the 100 and Berutti was second in the 200, just .06 behind Allen.

Iron Mountain freshman Sarah Kulas ran a personal best in the 3200 (13:30.26).

“Iron Mountain has some talent,” Harry said. “I told the girls they are no pushovers so come prepared to give it your all.”

In the boys meet, Kulas outlasted the field in the 1600 (5:01.10) and 800 (2:01.72) runs and also fueled the 3200 (9:07.76) and 1600 (3:39.16) relays.

Iron Mountain swept the 1600 with Kulas, Brandon Malburg and Parker Morgan.

Vicenzi captured the long jump (18-10) along with running in the 800, 1600 and 3200 relays.

Charlie Gerhard tacked on IM firsts in 110 hurdles (15.56), 300 hurdles (41.53) and 1600 relay. He also had a second in high jump (5-8) behind teammate Jacob Tucker.

“Charlie is getting faster in the hurdles,” said IM coach Kevin Sullivan.

Tucker was also on the 800 relay (1:35.22).

Flivver sprinter Preston Strong won the 100 (11.57), 400 (54.32) and 200 (24.12) dashes.

“I was very happy with the way we sprinted tonight and our sprint relays,” said Flivver coach Doug Roberts, noting Strong had a great night. “Preston is a dual-sport athlete with track and tennis and has been a great addition to our team.

Flivvers’ 800 relay of Nate Rutter, Brad VanRemortel, Mike Creighton and Trevor Povolo improved their time by two seconds.

“Overall, we competed very hard but came up a little short,” Roberts said. “We have a great group of guys on this team and everyone is getting better with each meet. They are a pleasure to coach.”

Liam Gayan, first in shot (42-2.25) and discus (111-6), helped Kingsford earn a 20-16 edge in field event points.

“It was nice to see Joey Rietveld throw over 41 feet again in the shot to take second place,” Roberts said.

Kingsford Invitational takes place Tuesday at Flivver Field. Defending champions are the Flivver girls and Mountaineer boys.
