Boys soccer: Backlund, Hellman lead Flivvers past Devils

IRONWOOD — Ben Backlund scored the final two goals and Dan Hellman had the first two as Kingsford edged Ironwood 5-4 in boys soccer Tuesday.

The Flivvers (2-4) started the scoring with Dan Hellman taking a 20-foot pass from Brennan Phillips and hitting the back left corner of the net.

Hellman’s shot from six-feet out brought in the second goal. Pablo Cano Sarobe had the assist.

On the third goal, Kobe Gordon passed through two defenders to Michael Halley. He hit the back of the net from 25-feet away.

Backlund scored the next two goals, with assists from Gordon and Halley.

“Our team played good soccer with good passing and team play,” said Kingsford Coach Jeff Gordon. “Our midfielders attacked the ball at center field to help keep the ball out of our side of the field.

“With the combination of our young players and our seasoned players, we are moving the ball with more accuracy. We are working on being more consistent on both ends of the field. It was a good win for our team.”
