‘Fish happens’ — Kingsford graduate Kelly Allen edged out in world paracanoe race

Kelly Allen

Kingsford High School graduate Kelly Allen competed this month in paracanoe at the ICF World Championships in Montemor O Velho, Portugal.

In the second heat, she missed a spot in the finals by three hundredths of a second. Midway through the 200-meter race, Allen’s paddle hit a fish.

While it had never happened to her at a race before, she does occasionally run into wildlife while training. Kelly was disappointed, but took the results in stride.

“Fish happens,” Allen reported on her Facebook page.

She now turns her attention to the upcoming ICF Pan American Championships in Nova Scotia on Sept. 13.
