Football: Bobcats rout Wolves, 62-6

FLORENCE, Wis. — Unbeaten Florence rolled to a 48-6 halftime lead and spilled Carney-Nadeau 62-6 in eight-player football Friday at Landry Field.

Joe Walstrom scored three touchdowns and Toby Wheeler ran 52 yards for a touchdown and opened the scoring with a 20-yard pass to Evan Beaster.

Walstrom rushed for 166 yards on nine attempts including touchdowns of 26, 60 and nine yards. Wheeler added 111 yards on eight carries; Eric DeCremer had 72 on eight with a 25-yard touchdown; and Dakota Wicke had a seven-yard touchdown.

“Our backs hit the holes and got the yards that were there,” said Florence Coach Kent Walstrom, noting the Bobcats worked on their base run game after the early lead. “We had a lot of production in the run game.

“We had a nice game up front by the linemen. We dominated the line of scrimmage and time of possession.”

Kaden Schuls returned a pass interception for a touchdown. Wheeler blocked a punt to set up a score.

“Carney-Nadeau is primarily a passing team, so we had an opportunity for a lot of starters and reserves to defend a lot of passing formations and route combinations,” Walstrom said. “Teams do seem to be more pass reliant in eight-man than 11-man, so that was good practice for us.”

Gary Liebergen led the Bobcats (4-0) with eight tackles and 2.5 sacks. Bryce Larson, DeCremer and Schuls each had seven tackles and Beaster had six.

“Carney-Nadeau is building their program,” Walstrom said. “They have a lot of juniors and sophomores playing much like we were a year ago. We’ve been there. We understand the challenges their dealing with.”

The Bobcats held a 30-0 lead in the first period.

“Things could have gotten chippy but they never did,” Walstrom said. “There was good sportsmanship by both teams. They knew what the score was and kept it clean.”

The Bobcats will face Port Edwards on Friday at DC Everest High School.
