Bowling: Unbeaten Lady Mountaineers roll on

MARINETTE, Wis. — Iron Mountain High School girls bowling team added another win Saturday, beating shorthanded L’Anse 37-3 at Dome Lanes.

“The ladies from L’Anse only had four bowlers, so a win for them would have been difficult to achieve,” said Iron Mountain Coach Pete Tomassoni.

The unbeaten Lady Mountaineers and Escanaba are tied with 5-0 records.

After sweeping the Baker games, IM took eight out of a possible nine points in each team game.

Leading the way with a 522 series (191-181-150) and three individual points was Alexis Jacko. Also taking three points were Hanna Bastian with a 464 series (158-153-153) and Natalie Dykhuis with a 458 series (171-153-134).

Also chipping in individual points were Jane McCallister and Marissa Rasmussen.

IM boys team dropped a heartbreaker to Menominee by a total of five pins, 2536-2541.

“The count for total pins switched back and forth the entire match,” said Tomassoni.

The Mountaineers found themselves in an 88-pin deficit after the Baker match (278-303) and game one (754-817). The deficit became a 60-pin surplus after game two, when the boys roared back with an 843 team game, with Brandon Malburg (211 game) and Zach Spera (190 game) leading the charge.

The Mountaineers fall five pins shy in the third game with a team game of 661 to the Maroons 726.

The Mountaineer X team topped the Escanaba X mixed team 32-8. The Mountaineers began by sweeping the Baker set, 346-233, and then taking all nine possible points in game one (732-557).

Eight of nine points were won by the Mountaineers in game two by a score of 697-578. Game three went to the Eskymos, where they took seven of the possible nine points, 633-597.

Topping the Mountaineers with games of 184 and 179 was Austin Marier, who also won both individual points. Next was Trey Nichols with games of 149 and 162 and two individual points.

Following on Nichols’ heels was Nate Henes with games of 161 and 148 and two individual points. Hunter Lautzenheiser posted a high game of 152, winning two points.

Mountaineers travel to Whirl-i-Gig Bowl in L’Anse on Saturday. The Lady Mountaineers will be tested by UP High School Bowling Conference co-leader Escanaba while both the boys and X teams will face off against the Gladstone Braves teams. Competition will begin at 1:30 p.m.
