Girls basketball: Wykons edge Flivvs

IRON RIVER — West Iron County rallied in the second half to edge Kingsford 39-38 in non-conference girls basketball Monday at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium.

The Flivvers (6-4) held a 26-22 halftime lead over the UP’s top-ranked Division 1-3 team.

“Kingsford truly came to play,” said WIC coach Eric Shamion. “Kingsford played a real good zone that didn’t allow us to get our high-low game going.”

The Wykons (10-2) built a six-point lead in the fourth quarter and held off the Flivvers.

“It was a hard fought game against a very good team,” said Kingsford coach Lisa Harry. “I am proud of the hustle and determination the girls played with tonight.

“We gave ourselves a chance to win at the end and we can’t hang our heads on that loss.”

WIC’s Emily Nelson scored 10 of her game-high 18 points in the first half and grabbed 10 rebounds.

“Our team D was outstanding and the offense was clicking in the first half,” Harry said. “We struggled offensively in the second half at times. West Iron took away some of our drives and cuts to the basket in the second half and I think we forgot to look for the outside shot. But we had our chances.”

Flivvers’ Brooke Kriegl tallied 14 points, five assists and five steals. Maggie Strehlow had 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Flivvers converted 5 of 13 free throws.

“We just needed a couple more shots or free throws to fall,” Harry said. “We need to improve on our free throws before districts. It’s hard to pull off close games shooting 38 percent from the free throw line.”

Kingsford visits Norway tonight and WIC travels to L’Anse on Monday.

West Iron County JV won.
