Swimming: Flivver girls sink Houghton

IRON MOUNTAIN — Ailie Schoenborn and Peyton Johnson each took two firsts as Kingsford’s girls dunked Houghton 97-73 at the Northern Lights YMCA pool Thursday.

“Our girls did really well,” said Flivver coach Jim Lindstrom, noting eight firsts out of 11 events.

Schoenborn won the 50 and 100 free while Johnson claimed the 200 IM and 100 back. Samantha Scott copped the 200 free.

The Flivvers swept all three relays.

“Winning the relays is so important,’ Lindstrom said. “That’s eight points even if the other team takes the next three spots for only six points.”

Samantha Scott, Tianna Brooks, Kendall Johnson and Sydney Scott grabbed the 200 medley; 200 free relay went to Emily Bruns, Schoenborn, Sydney Scott and Peyton Johnson; and the 400 free relay was comprised of Bruns, Schoenborn, Samantha Scott and Peyton Johnson.

“Some of the girls dropped a lot of time,” Lindstrom said. “Maggie Menghini dropped 30 seconds in her two races (200 and 500 free).

In the boys meet, Houghton downed Kingsford 101-60.

“The boys did very well also,” Lindstrom said. “It was just a case of being outnumbered again.”

Kolbe Raiche led the Flivvers, winning both of his races in “impressive fashion,” according to Lindstrom. Raiche dropped seven seconds in the 200 IM and five seconds in the 500 free.

“To take off that much time at his level is incredible,” Lindstrom said. “Luke Sturm also had a great meet taking off three-plus seconds in winning the 200 free.”

John Lundholm dropped time in nearly winning the 100 fly.

In the race of the night, Shane Brooks and Raiche brought the 400 free relay team from fourth to second in the last two legs of the race. Raiche, Sturm, Lundholm and Brooks won the 200 medley relay.

The Flivvers compete Saturday in the Marquette Invite.
