HOUGHTON — Iron Mountain finished off a perfect regular season with a 79-52 drubbing of the hometown Gremlins.

“They’re a very, very good team,” Houghton coach Jared Lawson said. “They have no weak spots and those two scorers they have (Marcus Johnson and Foster Wonders) are incredible players. As a team, they all know their roles and they really play well as a team.”

Johnson and Wonders, as usual, were a two-man wrecking crew for the Mountaineers (20-0). Johnson dropped in eight three-pointers on the way to 31 points, while Wonders was good for 30 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Iron Mountain head coach Bucky Johnson said his team’s motto is to play them one at a time.

“We know that it’s tournament time and anything can happen,” Johnson said. “We play a good Ironwood team on Monday and we have to play well to advance.”

The Gremlins (10-10), who travel to Kingsford Monday for an opening round district test, will need to get better balance to keep their season going.

“If there was a big fault I could find in our game tonight, it was that all our guys were not looking to score,” Lawson said. “After Brad (Sirard) and George (Butvilas), we didn’t get much.”

Sirard led his team with 26 points, knocking down six triples. He also had 10 rebounds for a double-double. Butvilas notched 15 points — all but three coming in the opening two quarters.

Johnson said he was well aware of the Gremlins aces.

“Sirard can shoot from anywhere on the court and Butvilas is also a threat,” he said. “But we did a good job of tracking them tonight.”

IM mounted a 22-11 lead after one quarter as Johnson made five 3-pointers.

Wonders had two from long range in the second frame as the invaders went up by a 42-25 margin at the break.

Sirard kept the Orange and Black within hailing distance in the second half as he sank five trifectas.

But Houghton could never get closer than 62-45 in the fourth quarter.
