Girls basketball: IM finds life in 3rd, beats Manistique

IRON MOUNTAIN — Iron Mountain came out strong in the third quarter to break a halftime tie and defeated Manistique 49-38 in Mid-Peninsula Conference action Monday.

The Mountaineers (6-12, 3-7) snapped a 22-22 halftime tie with a 12-3 run in the third quarter.

“We came out a little flat and could have played with better intensity,” Iron Mountain head coach Katelynn Grenier said. “Manistique fought hard and battled.

“We ended up kicking in the burners in the second half and responded much better. Jorden Stoner scored eight points in the third quarter and played real well.”

Saylor Swartout, Faith Bal and Reagan Lundholm each scored 10 points for the Mountaineers, who lost standout Riley Poupore to a knee injury in last week’s game with Kingsford.

Swartout chipped in five steals. Bal had eight of the Mountaineers’ 39 rebounds.

“The scoring was balanced and everybody chipped in and played well,” Grenier said. “They’re trying to figure things out without Riley but they’re working on it. Overall it was a

pretty good win.”

IM shot 16 of 57 from the floor but just one of 14 from the three-point line.

Emilee McDaniel’s 12 points topped the Emeralds.

The Mountaineers travel to Gwinn tonight and close out the regular season Thursday at Gladstone.
