KHS swimming: Peyton Johnson, Kolbe Raiche named MVP

KINGSFORD — Peyton Johnson and Kolbe Raiche have been named most valuable swimmers for the 2019 Kingsford High School team.

Team members made the selections Sunday at the team banquet. Johnson and Raiche also led the Flivvers in scoring this season.

In other team honors, Maggie Menghini and Luke Sturm received most improved. Samantha Scott and Sydney Scott shared the girls rookie of the year award while Caleb Voss won for the boys.

Johnson and Ailie Schoenborn earned All-UP girls status while Sturm, Raiche and Lundholm made the UP boys team.

Johnson led the Kingsford girls to second place in the UP Finals in Marquette on Saturday.

“I was not 100 percent certain of what was going to happen losing so many practice days to weather,” said Kingsford Coach Jim Lindstrom. “We had many excellent performances. The girls were really on.”

The girls 200 free relay won with a UP record of 1:43.51, erasing the old mark of 1:44.75 set 19 years ago.

“Emily Bruns, Sydney Scott, Ailie Schoenborn and Peyton Johnson really swam well on that one,” Lindstrom said.

In the next race, Johnson “absolutely destroyed” the 100 back record, posting a 56.71 time to lower the standard by 6.61 seconds.

“Peyton was really on today,” Lindstrom said. “All of her swims were personal bests. Those were the only two wins that the girls had but there were lots of great swims.”

Ailie Schoenborn took a second in the 100 free with a personal best of 57.14.

“Ailie was consistent all meet long with some great swims as part of the 200 free relay and the 400 free relay,” Lindstrom said. “Tiana Brooks, Sydney Scott, Samantha Scott, Kendall Johnson, Maggie Menghini, Emily Nelson and Anna Lundholm made up the rest of the team that made the finals and all swam extremely well.”

The 10 Flivver girls that went to finals came back with 22 medals.

Six Kingsford boys produced 20 medals and a fourth in the UP team standings.

Raiche led the way with a win in the 500 free and a second in the 200 IM. Sturm followed it up with seconds in the 500 free and 200 free.

“John Lundholm also had a very good final,” said Lindstrom, noting a second in 100 fly and fourth in 200 IM. “February must be John’s month because he always makes a huge jump at Finals.”

Shane Brooks added a fourth and fifth in 100 free and 50 free, respectively. Sam Bilgreen and Caleb Voss rounded out the team in the relays.
