Wrestling: Mascarette third at sectional

BONDUEL, Wis. — Northwoods Storm’s Tristen Mascarette will begin his quest for WIAA state wrestling honors on Thursday.

Mascarette, wrestling at 120 pounds for the Florence-Niagara co-op, placed third in the sectionals Saturday.

Mascarette (37-5) opened the sectional by beating Bonduel’s Jayson Toellner 7-2. The Florence senior then suffered a 2-1 loss to Stratford’s Manny Drexler in the semifinals.

He bounced back by decisioning Rosholt’s Bo Niewiadomski 7-2 in the consolation bracket and pinning Coleman’s Kasey Casper in the third-place match.

Coleman’s Shamus McLain, a former Florence wrestler, qualified for state by placing third at 170 pounds in the sectional. The junior shows a 28-2 record.

The 76th annual WIAA Individual Wrestling Championship Tournament takes place Thurday through Saturday at the Kohl Center.

Mascarette will open with Boyceville sophomore Nate Stuart (36-12). The winner faces Mason Lull of Fennimore (35-12) in the next round.
