Golf: Esky’s Hebert in Michigan Open

ACME – Escanaba’s Scott Hebert is one of 13 past champions who will play Monday through Thursday in the 102nd Michigan Open Championship

Hebert, of Traverse City Golf & Country Club, won his record-tying six Michigan Open titles on The Bear between 1997 and 2006. He is a past head golf professional at the resort and also worked for the golf operation after college.

The 156-man field will play 72 holes with a 36-hole cut to the low 70 scorers and ties. The purse will be announced during the tournament.

Solda, O’Connell

lead OC men

NORWAY — Mike Solda and Ed O’Connell each shot one- over 37 for Division A co-medalist in the Forward Financial Monday Night Golf League at Oak Crest Golf Course.

Brian Tirschel and Mark Zenko lead the Division A team standings.

In Division B, Bob Magnuson claimed medalist with a 39. JJ Allred with Bob Swanson and Ron VanAlstine with Dan Trulock are tied for first place.

Bjorne-Clements

win ‘Portage’

HOUGHTON — KC Bjorne and Mark Clements hung on to win the annual Portage Lake Golf Course best ball tournament.

Chassell native Bjorne and Ishpeming’s Clements posted a two-day total of 140 (69, 71) to prevail by one stroke over Carter Mason-Rob Carlson and Blake Miller-Scott Frasier.

“I picked the best partner I could pick,” Bjorne told The Mining Gazette.

Gagnon takes

‘Aces Are Wilds’

NORWAY — Kathy Gagnon led the Oak Crest Ladies 18-Hole Golf League.

In the “Aces Are Wild” game, Gagnon posted a 72 to beat Sally Osterberg, 75; and Sybil McCotter, 81.
