Iron Mountain’s Julie (Heldt) Wonders named to NMU Hall

MARQUETTE — Iron Mountain’s Julie (Heldt) Wonders is among the newest inductions into the Northern Michigan University Sports Hall of Fame.

The school announced Wonders as part of the 2019 class including four others and the 2007 women’s nordic ski team.

The other inductees are Penti Joronen, Tim Schultz, Scott Sible, and Lisa Tomschek.

The 2007 women’s nordic ski team includes Kelly Ahern, Heather Bassett, Anna Berglund, Tanya Cook, Laura Dewitt, Ingrid Fjeldheim, Maria Grossi, Morgan Smyth, Maria Stuber, Christina Gillis, Lindsey Dehlin, Lindsay Williams, Jennifer Wygant, Sten Fjeldheim and Jenny Ryan.

Wonders, originally from the Kalamazoo area, is the school’s scoring average leader (21.1 points) and also holds the record for most points scored in a season (715) and season points per game (25.5). She also once made 18 free throws in a game.

In 1991-92, Wonders was named the team’s Newcomer of the Year, Second Team All-GLIAC and NCAA Regional Tournament MVP. The following season, she was named GLIAC Player of the Year and team MVP.
