KINGSFORD – The Kingsford Flivvers returned to Commemorative Field on Thursday night and defeated Escanaba 6-1 in prep soccer.

Kingsford scored its first goal on a combination of passes at the two-minute mark when Brennan Phillips stole the ball from the Escanaba defender and passed to Ben Backlund to Dan Hellman for a 15-foot shot in the back of the net. the next goal came at the five-minute mark when Michael Halley passed over to Daniel Ferreiro for a 40-foot shot. The third goal nine minutes into the game came when Hellman passed over to Gordon for a 20-foot shot in the corner of the net.

The fourth goal at the 12-minute mark came when Backlund crossed over to Gordon for a 15-foot shot in the back of the net. Escanaba scored its only goal 13 minutes into the game making the score 4-1 at that point.

Kingsford’s fifth goal came at the 15-minute mark when Michael Halley shot at the goal and the Escanaba goalie caught the ball and tossed it to one of his players. Gordon stole the ball and put it in the back of the net from approximately 20 feet away.

The final goal came 19 minutes into the first half when Halley passed to Backlund for a 20 foot shot to the right corner of the net.

“We scored our goals early and fast.,” said Kingsford coach Jeff Gordon. “Great team win. It gave me the opportunity to get our young bench players in the game in the first half at the 20-minute mark. The more time they play the more ready they will be when their name is called to play,” he said.

Kingsford’s defense helped keep Escanaba shots on goal to only two, while Kingsford had 14 shots on goal.

“Erick Lindstrom, Marshall Shorkey, Eli Whittkopf, Nathan Arndt, Carter Fraker, Michael Hill-Scott and Matthew Bruns stepped up and played well,” said Gordon. “They got good game time experience in the first half and they played most of the second half.”

The Flivvers, now 8-1 on the season, host Iron Mountain at 6 p.m. Monday.
