Norway going to 8-player?

NORWAY — The Norway-Vulcan School District will look into the possibility of switching to eight-player football, perhaps a season or two down the road, the high school athletic director said.

Joe Tinti, who also is the high school principal, got the school board’s unanimous permission Wednesday night to seek out a potential eight-player football conference for the Knights.

Tinti said Friday afternoon the discussion is just starting and nothing is set.

“At this point, no agreements have been made, no contracts have been signed, and no letters have been sent to any conference commissioner or president, asking for our acceptance into any eight-player football conference,” Tinti said.

“Basically, there’s nothing on the table right now, nor a timetable as to when this will happen, as there are many variables to this process, and this decision” Tinti said.

They expect to play the full nine-game, 11-player schedule in the West PAC Conference Iron (Small School) Division for 2020-21, he said.

If Norway does make the move, it would follow Forest Park, North Central and North Dickinson among area schools that in recent years went to eight-player teams.

A number of Upper Peninsula districts have increasingly struggled with less interest in the game along with declining enrollment in fielding a team.
