Crandon 60

Florence 37

FLORENCE, Wis. — In Northern Lakes Conference action Tuesday night, Crandon defeated Florence 60-37. Crandon came into the game as the No. 7-ranked Division 4 team in the state.

Despite the loss, Florence head coach Brad Perry was very pleased with his team’s performance on the night.

“We played hard,” he said. “We’d have to play our type of game against them and we did that.”

Florence is a Division 5 size team in the WIAA.

Florence was within three points with seven minutes left in first half, Perry noted.

“We made them switch to zone defense from their usual man-to-man, by the way we played in the first half,” he said.

Crandon is well known for how they play smothering man-to-man defense, with a full court press all game long, throughout most of the season. The Lady Cats altered that through a portion of the game, Perry said.

Florence was led in scoring by the Springer twins who combined for 26 points, with Jenna leading the way with a team-high 14 points.

“The girls did great defensively, Madison Neuens especially. We talked and hustled to the ball,” said Perry.

Neuens also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

The next game for the Lady Cats (3-5) is Friday night when non-conference foe Coleman travels to Florence.

North Central 56

Stephenson 42

POWERS — North Central took an early lead and cruised past Stephenson 56-42 Tuesday night in a Skyline Central Conference contest.

It was the Jets’ defense that allowed them to build a 40-24 halftime lead.

“We played really well the way we pressed and pressured them,” Jets’ coach Lee Vincent said. “We got some steals on it. We played really good defense. Jaiden Fleetwood did a great job on Emily Johnson.”

Vincent felt it was patience that propelled the Jets (3-1).

“Bree Arsenault had 12 points in the first half,” he said. “She had some big shots for us. Her sister Andie also did a great job the first quarter. We were more patient and used our heads. We played really smart.”

The second half was much more low scoring, as the Jets held on for the win.

“I think we were running out of gas,” Vincent said. “We were also slowing it down in the second (half), and we passed it around quite a bit looking for open shots.

“All around, the defense was our gamewinner and being really patient with the ball on offense. I’m proud of the team. They played really well.”

Emily Johnson led the Eagles with 15 points.

The Jets were led by Arsenault with 18 points and Andie Arsenault with 13. Alex Neville added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Stephenson won the jayvee game 31-25.

North Central travels to Munising Friday.
