Flivvers too much for ND

KINGSFORD – Kingsford racked up 44 points by halftime and scooted by North Dickinson 65-43 Thursday evening in non-conference boys basketball.

Brody Kopp led all scorers with 17 points. Cole Bracket added 13 and Hunter Bilgreen scored 10. All three players were in double figures by halftime as Kingsford opened a 25-point cushion at the break.

“The kids did a really good job of executing our game plan,” Flivvers head coach Dan Olkkonen said. “We had real good interior play. Kopp, Bracket and Bilgreen, they did real well passing and finding each other on the interior.”

Cameron Schultz led the Nordics with 14 points and five steals, and Brennan Donaldson added 12 points, but the Nordics managed just 30-percent shooting from the field.

“We didn’t come out with the intensity that we needed on the defensive side of things,” Nordics head coach Chris Mattson said. “They turned us over. Their press led to some easy transition points. The Kingsford kids played hard and fast. Overall, they played a better game than we did.”

The Flivvers (3-6) saw eight players score points, including nine from Michael Meneguzzo. Olkkonen had some concern coming off the high-intensity battle against Iron Mountain the other night.

“We ended up having one of our best practices of the past month on Wednesday,” he said. “And it really helped us out tonight. North Dickinson, Chris always does a good job with those guys. They will get better as they go, and that’s all we’re trying to do too.”

Kingsford’s freshmen took down Crivitz JV2 52-40, led by Cole Myllyla’s 20 points and 10 points by Ben Trevillian. In JV action, Kingsford beat North Dickinson 84-22, with Dennis Neuens (15 points) and Lucca Rizzo (13 points) leading the charge. Warren Gustafson scored nine for the Nordics.

Kingsford heads to Menominee Monday. The Nordics play at Forest Park Tuesday.
