Hometowne Building Supply monthly athletes revealed

IRON MOUNTAIN — Kingsford swimmer Sydney Scott and Iron Mountain wrestler Shawn McGuire were selected as the December Hometowne Lumber male and female Athletes of the Month.

Scott, a sophomore, is a vital part of the Flivvers swim team. Head coach Jim Lindstrom said, “She swims in any and all events when needed, no questions asked.”

In December, Scott recorded four firsts, a second and a third place finish in three meets, scoring 45.50 points to lead the entire team. She was also part of relays that count as part of the scoring.

McGuire, a freshman 112-pound grappler for the Mountaineers, went 16-1 in December. He took first place in his weight class at the Marquette Challenge, being the only freshman to place first in the annual event.

He was also 5-0 at the Munising Holiday Super Duals over Christmas break. IM head wrestling coach Cory McLaren said, “For a freshman he’s really doing well, with a calm and relaxed demeanor on the mat.”

Athletes of the Month are automatically in the running for the Hometowne Lumber male and female Athletes of the Year, announced at the year-end banquet on June 3.

Other December nominations included North Dickinson’s Cameron Schultz basketball) and Ashton Hord (basketball); Niagara’s Alyssa Cretton (basketball) and Josh Weber (basketball); Iron Mountain’s Marcus Johnson (basketball) and Reagan Lundholm (basketball); Norway’s Kody Hendricks (basketball) and Mackenzie Clifford (basketball); Florence’s Kaden Schuls (basketball) and Madison Neuens (basketball); and Kingsford’s Kolbe Raiche (swimming).
