MARQUETTE — Iron Mountain, with only seven wrestlers, finished fourth (110 points) and had two individual champions with Shawn McGuire and Parker Stroud at the U.P. Wrestling championships Saturday.

Escanaba claimed the overall title at the 11-team meet with 209 points and five individual champions, followed by Marquette (179) and Gladstone (156.5).

“I couldn’t be any happier with the results from this weekend,” IM head coach Cory McLaren said. “To enter seven wrestlers and to come home with five medalists is great.”

McGuire, 24-1 this season, defeated Marquette senior Payton Holmstrom 7-1 at 112 pounds, Stroud (17-4) took out Gwinn’s Xander Luoma by major decision (16-4) at 130 for a second consecutive U.P. title.

Other Mountaineers who medaled included freshman Evan Haferkorn, who is 20-8 on the season, losing to Escanaba junior Collin Sent by pin fall in the 125-pound finals. Sophomore Isaac Manier (135) defeated freshman Jacob Berry of Manistique by fall to take third place and improve to 14-4 on the season. Sophomore Preston Roberts (17-10) also earned a third place, defeating senior Tyler Lindholm of Westwood by fall in a 140-pound bout.

“This season has been tough with all the injuries and illness,” McLaren said. “Hopefully we can build off this weekend and keep improving towards individual districts.”

Next up for Iron Mountain is three meets this week, beginning with a quad at Menominee Tuesday.

Kingsford placed seventh as a team.

“We came up short on our goal placing in the top five but it wasn’t from the lack of effort,” said head coach Darren Groleau. “From top to bottom our lineup competed and left it all on the mat, and they wrestled with everything they had. We, as a coaching staff, are satisfied with their overall effort.”

Ben Standish took second at (215) losing to Leo Helppi of Negaunee 8-3 in the finals.

“Ben had a great tournament,” Groleau said. “He wrestled a little nervous in the final match and wasn’t able to get his offense going. But we are proud of the effort he put in, and we hope he has another crack at Helppi before the season is over.”

Toby Wilcox and Eddie Cardew both took third at (145) and (285) respectively.

Wilcox had the toughest road to the podium because 145 had a pretty stacked lineup, according to Groleau. Hex ended up losing to Brody Bevins from Escanaba in the semifinals by 7-2 decision. In his third place match, Wilcox got some revenge from last year’s U.P. Finals, beating Matthew Mundy from Sault St. Marie in a 4-0 decision.

“Eddie lost a tough match to Chris Ricker from Marquette but was able to recover and got some redemption against Isaac Brewster from Manistique who beat Cardew last Thursday,” noted Groleau.

Josh Peterson took fifth at 140 pounds.

“He wrestled really tough all day,” Groleau said. “He lost a tough quarterfinal match where he was up 10-0 but kept his composure and was able to battle back to take fifth place pinning Clayton Eichhorn from Bark River-Harris.

As a team the Flivvers had two other wrestlers fall short from placing Mac Kalcec (119) and Michael Hill-Scott (130) both placed sixth. Places one through five take medals on the podium.

Kingsford heads to a quad at Westwood Thursday. Iron Mountain will also be competing.
