Neuens has double-double in Florence girls’ victory

FLORENCE, Wis. — With Madison Neuens posting a double-double and team-high 17 points, 13 rebounds along with six steals, Florence defeated non-conference foe Watersmeet 63-24 Thursday night.

Jenna Springer also scored 17 points for Florence.

“We played really good team defense tonight, and we also did a good job in half court offense and defense,” said Florence head coach Brad Perry. “On offense, we were patient, disciplined creating and taking good shots.

“Jenna Springer shot the ball very well. Madison had a great all around game.”

The game was recently added to both teams schedules within the last two weeks, with Florence filling one of the two holes vacated by Goodman-Pembine canceling its season.

Haley Berhmann grabbed 10 rebounds.

“She played great defense,” Perry noted. “Tonight was a good night for our team. It was great to have everyone contribute.

“Watersmeet is very young, starting the only senior on their team. They’re very disciplined, very physical and play hard, while being very inexperienced. They played a 1-3-1 zone defense, which we weren’t used to, but we did ok against it.”

Florence, who improves to 6-7 on the season, has a quick turnaround, returning to Northern Lakes Conference action tonight, traveling to Laona-Wabeno. On Monday, the LadyCats have an NLC makeup game, hosting White Lake in the second game of a varsity doubleheader, with the Florence boys playing at 5:45 p.m. prior to the girls game.

In the JV game, Florence got their first win of the season 25-13. Paige Uren led the way with 11 points for Florence.
