WIC takes battle of Iron County

STAMBAUGH — In non-conference action on Friday night the West Iron County Lady Wykons slipped past their long time county rival Forest Park 36-34 at the Charles Greenlund Gymnasium.

Each team had their star center record a double-double. FP’s Mercedes Simmons scored a game-high 17 points, to go along with 13 rebounds. Emily Nelson of WIC scored 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as well. Jordan Shamion snared 12 rebounds for the Wykons.

The battle of Iron County as far as high school girls basketball goes, was a defensive battle as per both coaches’ assessment of the game — Wykons head coach Eric Shamion and the Lady Trojans head coach Kim Bjork.

“Both teams played physical and we matched up against each other well,” Bjork said. “It came down to free throws at the end and WIC made theirs. We are so happy with the effort our girls gave and it was a fun game to be a part of.”

The free throws Bjork referred to at the end of the game that WIC made were shot by the Wykons high scorer Anna Malmquist, who netted 14 points.

“Anna Malmquist hit six big free throws down to the stretch to seal the victory for us,” said coach Shamion.

WIC, who improves to 6-1 on the season, returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Negaunee for a non-conference game.

FP who falls to 3-4, return home to host Skyline Central foe Mid Peninsula on the same night.

West Iron won the JV game 41-27.
