Flivvers deny Iron Mountain

KINGSFORD — Efficient ball movement and all around shooting, will likely increase a team’s chance of winning a basketball game. Kingsford had both of those things going for them Friday night as they defeated Iron Mountain 60-43 in non-conference girls basketball at the Kingsford Middle School Gymnasium.

The Flivvers completed the season sweep of the Mountaineers by canning nine three-pointers, to go along with only missing one of six free throw attempts. Kingsford also shot well near the basket — a great shooting night, especially in the second half, which put the game out of reach for their visitors from across Woodward Avenue.

“It’s always nice to get a win in this rivalry, especially for the second time this season,” said Kingsford head coach Lisa Harry. “I thought we played pretty well overall, especially shooting so well. I’ll take a good shooting night any night.”

Senior point guard Brooke Kriegl, who led the Flivvers with 16 points, ran Kingsford’s offense like she usually does, seeing the floor well and creating plays for her teammates. Maggie Strehlow chipped in 15 points, while grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.

Senior center Tori Sorensen led the Mountaineers with a game-high 17 points. Sophomore Annslee Runsat chipped in 12 points for Iron Mountain in the losing effort.

Harry noted that her team had 16 assists on the night.

“We played very unselfish, which was great,” she said. “That went along with our great ball movement.”

The great ball movement was something the Flivvers had throughout the game, both in transition and in half-court offensive sets.

“The girls played good tonight, they never gave up despite being very tired by the end of the game,” said Iron Mountain head coach Katelynn Grenier. “We game planned to get off to a good start, being down 5-0 right off the bat is not what we hoped for. But the girls battled back in that first quarter and kept it close for a while.

“I know the girls are tired with us only having six players, but they fought until the end. They had fun, and that’s what this game is about, to have fun against the crosstown rivals.”

Grenier noted that she and the team knew that they’d have to game plan to try to stop Kriegl, but the Flivvers have a strong team in other ares as well. “They shot very well from 3-point land tonight,” said Grenier. “Brooke (Kriegl) sees the floor well and creates so much for them, she did that again tonight.”

The Flivvers improved to 8-10 on the season, and remain home to host Great Northern Conference foe Gladstone in Kingsford’s last home and GNC game of the season. Thursday night, the Flivvers complete their regular season with a trip to Ishpeming for a non-conference matchup.

Iron Mountain slipped to 2-16 on the season, and returns home to complete the home portion of their regular season schedule when they welcome Gwinn on Tuesday night, for a dual West PAC and Mid Peninsula conference matchup. It will be senior night at the Mountaineer Gymnasium that night as well.

In the JV game, the Flivvers and head coach Jon Lorenzoni moved to 18-0 on the season, as they defeated Iron Mountain 35-28. Chloe Maycroft led all scorers with 16 points for the Mountaineers, while Erica Malone led Kingsford with eight points.
