Wykons comeback attempt falls short

CALUMET – West Iron County scored more than half its points in the final quarter but the comeback wasn’t enough to overcome Calumet, as the Wykons fell 53-46 in West PAC girls basketball Thursday.

Emily Nelson led all scorers with a double-double of 18 points and 15 rebounds, and Anna Malmquist added 13, including three triples in the fourth quarter when the Wykons outscored the Copper Kings 26-18.

“Our defense was good,” Wykons head coach Eric Shamion said. “We just had too many turnovers in our halfcourt offense. We cut the lead to five with a minute to go, but we had to foul.”

Marybeth Halonen led Calumet with 16 points, and Elli Djerf had 15 points.

West Iron County (10-9) plays at Westwood Tuesday.

Florence 24

THREE LAKES, Wis — In their regular season and Northern Lakes Conference finale, the Florence LadyCats were defeated by Three Lakes 69-24 here Thursday night.

“We came out flat tonight on the road, and we were without our starting point guard,” said Florence head coach Brad Perry.

Senior Jenna Springer missed the game due to a sprained ankle.

“The girls were playing in different positions than usual tonight, which threw off everything offensively,” Perry said. “Plus, we weren’t making many shots and they were knocking down everything including at least a dozen threes.”

Kathleen Seldon led Florence with seven points in the basketball game. Lacey Enders and Haley Berhmann each added five points.

The LadyCats finished the season at 11-11 for the second straight year. Three Lakes also won the JV game.

Florence, a No. 9 seed, plays at Elcho in round 1 of WIAA Sectional Tuesday at 7 p.m.
