Flivvers qualify five swimmers for UP Finals

IRON MOUNTAIN — In a U.P. high school swim meet on Tuesday, the co-op Kingsford swim team hosted Marquette at the Northern Lights YMCA Dickinson Center. The visitors swept the meet, winning 101-63 on the girls side and 123-30 against the boys.

“This is one of those meets where we are concerned with qualifying kids for the U.P. Finals, which are in two weeks, and not so much with the score of the meet,” said veteran Kingsford head coach Jim Lindstrom.

“We were fairly successful with several qualifiers. Tommy Lundholm in the 200 and 500 freestyle, Chase Carlson in the 50 freestyle, McKenzie Gilroy in the 200 IM, Zane Cahee 200 IM, and Adelaide McRoberts in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke,” Lindstrom said.

Adelaide McRoberts won the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke versus Marquette.

Adding seconds were Samantha Scott in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle, Anna Lundholm in 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle and Maggie McKinnon in the 100 breaststroke.

“The boys didn’t fare as well,” Lindstrom added. “Marquette has over twenty boys that are very good, to our eight, so we were severely outnumbered. Marquette as a team has twice as many swimmers as we do and they are very good.”

The Flivvers travel to Manistique this afternoon.
