Wykons earn first tennis win of season

STAMBAUGH — Behind a sweep of the doubles matches, and wins at both No. 2 and No. 3 singles, West Iron defeated non-conference foe Ishpeming 6-2 on Wednesday in girls tennis action at the Nelson Field courts in Stambaugh.

“We came in better prepared for this second match and improved on some of the little things we struggled with in Negaunee. Very proud of all the doubles teams for improving on net play and lobs and groundstroke angles as those were weak points in our first match,” said West Iron tennis coach Joe Serbentas.

“Singles play is improving but we still need lots of work on consistency and staying in points and rallies longer. This first week of tennis matches is always a test of mental determination as you are loaded with matches day after day,” Serbentas added.

The Wykons (1-1) return to action this morning as they open their 2021 Great Northern Conference season hosting Kingsford at 10 a.m.
