Wolverines rally to down Flivvers 82-69

CRIVITZ, Wis. — Kingsford coach Dan Olkkonen said he couldn’t remember playing the Crivitz Wolverines.

Well, the Wolverines made sure Tuesday’s trip across the border was a memorable one, dominating the second half of the boys varsity basketball clash to secure a 82-69 win.

“First time I ever remember Kingsford playing Crivitz,” Olkkonen said. “Very physical game all the way through. We played pretty even through most of the game, but Crivitz hit some big 3s late to take the lead and hold.”

Kingsford was able to build a five-point advantage, 38-33, at halftime. But the Wolverines showed they had no intention of letting the Flivvers leave Wisconsin with the win, outgunning the Flivvers 49-31 in the second half.

“Crivitz is a big, strong disciplined team and were able to take a big advantage on the offensive boards,” Olkkonen said. “I thought we came out and controlled most of the first half.

“It seemed we got tired in the second and their pressure got us out of sync a little.”

It didn’t help that Kingsford was without Morgan Sleik and Jacob Markworth due to illness, “which put us scrambling to try to guard their bigs,” Olkkonen added.

Nic Nora hit four 3-pointers and was 7-of-8 at the free-throw line, as he scored a game-high 27 points to lead a quartet of Flivvers in double figures.

Cole Myllyla tallied 17, Cardell Morton 12 and Gavin Grondin 10 for Kingsford, with Cale Harris and Troy Watt completing the scoring for the Flivvers with two and one points, respectively.
