Kingsford wins 2 flights, 2nd at GNC

ESCANABA — The Kingsford boys tennis team’s No. 1 and No. 4 doubles pairings earned flight championships and the Flivvers finished runner-up to Escanaba in the race for the team championship Wednesday in the Great Northern Conference tournament in Escanaba.

The Eskymos totaled 24 points on the day to finish just in front of the Flivvers at 22 points for the team trophy. Marquette (20), Menominee (5), Munising (4), West Iron County (3) and Gladstone (2) rounded out the field.

For Kingsford, top seeded Ben Trevillian and Gabe Lafreniere earned a bye into a No. 1 doubles semifinal where they defeated Marquette 6-2, 7-5 before edging Munising 6-3, 3-6, 10-5 in the final.

Also top seeded, Brett Berglund and Isaac Lebouef held a bye into the No. 4 doubles semifinals. In their first match, the Flivver duo defeated Gladstone before defeating Marquette 7-5, 6-2 in the final.

Kingsford also earned runners-up in three flights – Cale Harris at No. 3 singles, Eli Wallis and Jacob Saari at No. 2 doubles and Chris Sweig and Hunter Hulkkonen at No. 3 doubles.

Harris had a bye into the semifinals, where he beat Drew Alexa of West Iron 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, and then lost in the final to Escanaba.

Wallis and Saari knocked off Menominee 6-2, 6-2 in the first round and then Escanaba 6-2, 6-3 in the semis. The Flivver duo fell to Marquette 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the final.

Sweig and Hulkkonen defeated Menominee 6-2, 6-0 and Marquette 6-2, 7-6 in the semifinals before falling to Escanaba 6-0, 7-6 (0) in the title match.

The Flivvers also picked up valuable third-place points from No. 1 singles Isaac Nash and No. 4 singles Landon Adam. Nash beat West Iron’s Caleb Strom 6-2, 6-1 and then defeated Marquette in the consolation match. No. 4 singles Landon Adam upended Caiden Curtis of Menominee 6-2, 6-0 in his opener and defeated Zander Birmingham of West Iron in the consolation match.

At No. 2 singles, Kingsford’s Gavin Moore won his first match of the day, rolling past Brant Veeser of Gladstone 6-1, 6-1 to add one point to the Kingsford total.
