In Brief: Djokovic leads Serbs to semis

MALAGA, Spain (AP) — Novak Djokovic has become the outright most successful Serbian player in the history of the Davis Cup.

He took his nation to the semifinals for the second time in three years with his 21st straight singles victory on Thursday.

The top-ranked Djokovic beat Cameron Norrie 6-4, 6-4 to give Serbia a 2-0 victory over Great Britain and set up a last-four encounter with Jannik Sinner’s Italy on Saturday in the top team event in men’s tennis.

It was a record 44th Davis Cup match win overall for Djokovic. That moved him one ahead of Nenad Zimonjic. Djokovic has 40 singles wins for his country.

The Italians beat the Netherlands 2-1. Australia and Finland will meet in the other semifinal match.

WINGS BLANK VISITING DEVILS

DETROIT (AP) — Alex Lyon made 16 saves for his second career shutout, Robby Fabbri had a goal and an assist and the Detroit Red Wings beat the New Jersey Devils 4-0 on Wednesday night.

Lyon was making his second start of the season. Last April with Florida, he shut out Columbus.

Fabbri capped a three-goal spree in a 1:12 span late in the first period in Detroit’s first game since returning from the NHL’s Global Series Sweden.

Lucas Raymond extended his goals streak to four games, Dylan Larkin and Moritz Seider also scored and Daniel Sprong had two assists.

New Jersey was shut out for the first time this season.

BADGERS RALLY TO TOP SMU 69-61

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Max Klesmit scored all 12 of his points in the second half and Wisconsin rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat SMU 69-61 on Wednesday night in the championship game of the Beach Division of the Fort Myers Tip-Off.

Tyler Wahl finished with 14 points and six rebounds for Wisconsin (4-2). Storr had 11 points, Hepburn added 10 and John Blackwell had 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench.

Wisconsin plays host to Western Illinois on Monday.

HOWARD RETURNS TO WATCH GAME

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — Ashton Hardaway hit the first five 3-pointers of his collegiate career in scoring 17 points and helped Memphis hold off Michigan 71-67 Wednesday in the Battle 4 Atlantis with both head coaches making their first appearances on the bench this season.

Juwan Howard, recovering from heart surgery on Sept. 15, was an observer while Phil Martelli continued to serve as interim head coach for the Wolverines.

Penny Hardaway was back for Memphis after returning from a three-game suspension resulting from recruiting violations.

Olivier Nkamhoua scored 14 of his game-high 18 points in the second half for Michigan before fouling out with 2:39 left.
