ST. IGNACE — Looking to earn a spot in the MHSAA Division 4 state tournament, the Iron Mountain varsity wrestling team made the trip to St. Ignace on Wednesday for Regional 125 action.

The Mountaineers (13-2) opened competition with a 47-30 win over Munising.

They met Charlevoix in the finals and picked up a 40-39 win to secure a third consecutive trip to the state finals.

“The day before I was sitting with my other coaches and going over the numbers and we had it going to a tie, 39-39,” Iron Mountain head coach Cory Mclaren said. “The kids fought hard in every match.”

Senior Bradon Walstrom put the Mountaineers on the board in the 165-pound division with a pin over the Rayders to make it a 6-6 match.

Instead of using senior Fulton Stroud at 165, Iron Mountain had the No. 2 ranked wrestler in Division 4, Stroud, bump up to 175-pounds for a match against Division 4’s No. 1 ranked 175-pounder, Brady Jess.

Stroud nearly tied the match in the final seconds, but it was too late and Jess picked up the 3-1 win to make it 9-6 in favor of the Rayders.

“It was a battle,” Mclaren said.

Charlevoix won the next three matches to extend its lead and make it a 27-6 match.

Iron Mountain senior Shayna Hruska ended the Rayders run after she grabbed a forfeit win at 106-pounds.

However, junior Brandon Rodriguez was pinned at 113 and Charlevoix extended its lead to 33-12.

Facing a large deficit, the Mountaineers went on a run starting with a forfeit win for senior Brandon Truong at 120-pounds. Senior Alex Wilson (126) and his cousin, DiAngelo Saldana (132) picked up victories by pin.

The Rayders held a 33-30 advantage with only three weight classes remaining.

Needing bonus points, it was time for senior Tyler Winch to take the mat for Iron Mountain. Winch manhandled Charlevoix’s 138-pounder and picked up a 17-5 major decision.

Charlevoix won by fall in the final match, but it was junior Daniel Manier who sealed the 40-39 win for the Mountaineers with a pin at 144.

“That was such a big pin for Danny Manier,” Mclaren said. “That’s a lot of pressure going out there and you need to pin for us to advance to team states. He handled it well.”

Iron Mountain will wrap up its season at the MHSAA Division 4 team finals starting on Feb. 23.

The Mountaineers’ first match hadn’t been decided as of Thursday.

Benzie Central, St. Louis, Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary, Hudson, Manchester, Bronson and Martin have also qualified for the MHSAA Division 4 team finals.
