IM secures third-consecutive district crown

BARK RIVER — Another year, another district title is headed to the trophy cases in Iron Mountain after the Iron Mountain varsity wrestling team powered through the competition in Bark River Wednesday to secure a Division 4 District 197 team championship.

The Mountaineers (11-2) opened action against North Central, grabbing a 52-6 victory, then they took down the Broncos, 42-36 in the championship match.

“This is a senior heavy team with 7 seniors on the roster and it showed in how the team came out and wrestled,” IM head coach Cory Mclaren said. “When the score was close, the team didn’t panic. (I’m) very proud of how we wrestled and it should be an exciting regional matchup.”

The highlight of the Mountaineers’ opening match against the Jets was a battle of U.P. champions, as North Central’s Cooper Raab moved up from 113-pounds to 120-pounds for a match with IM senior Alex Wilson. Wilson handled Raab and picked up a 13-4 majority decision.

Senior Fulton Stroud picked up the Mountaineers’ other contested win against the Jets with a pin of Adam Janczewski in 165-pound action.

North Central’s lone win came in the 126-pound division as Maddie Corrigan pinned Hunter Baumgartner from Iron Mountain.

The Broncos toppled Manistique to earn their spot in the championship. Bark River grabbed a 18-0 lead over the Mountaineers after Mitchell Corrigan won by forfeit at 190-pounds, Lucas Sischo pinned Giovanni Saldana at 215 and Charles Walker picked up a forfeit win at 285.

However, Iron Mountain responded as Baumgartner (126) and Di’Angelo Saldana (132) pinned their opponents. Shayna Hruska (113), Alex Wilson (120) and Tyler Winch also won by forfeit and the Mountaineers held a 3018 advantage.

The Broncos secured six points after Miles Halfaday pinned IM’s Jomar Rosario. Then things turned in the Mountaineers favor during Daniel Manier’s 150-pound match against Ethan Messersmith.

“Danny Manier match at 150 was the turning point against Ethan Messersmith,” Mclaren said. “Messersmith had Manier on his back in the first period.

“But Danny stayed calm and recovered with a second period pin.”

Bradon Walstrom (175-pounds) secured the win with a pin over the Broncos’ Hazeyel Norlander.

The Mountaineers wrestle in individual districts on Saturday in Manistique. Then they head to team regionals on Wednesday.

Iron Mountain’s regional round opponent and location will be released following Thursday’s Division 4 District 198 championship.
